Acorn (Reception)

Welcome to Acorn Class!

Acorn Class are our youngest group of children, all aged between 4 and 5 years old. They are taught by Mrs Claudine Clarke (Monday – Wednesday) and Miss Megan Tonkyn (Thursday and Friday). Mrs Jackie Upfold, our wonderful teaching assistant, is with them every day of the week and remains with the children at lunchtimes too. On Wednesdays the children have Aspire PE taught by Mr Nigel Gardner.

We spend a lot of time getting to know the children and finding out what is important to each child, including their favourite things and interests. We are always amazed by how quickly the children settle into school life. They have continuous access to carefully planned play activities both inside and outside the classroom.

We welcome parent’s input into their child’s unique learning experience and encourage you to work closely with us in planning for and supporting the children’s next steps. Please come and see us if you have any questions or worries and do keep us informed of any special achievements that your child makes at home so we can celebrate and record them at school as well.

Please note the children have PE lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays every week so please send your child into school in PE kit on those days

We love to share the work the children have been doing. Please check our web page often for weekly newsletters and recent photos.

This week Acorn class learned all about Africa! They focussed on the story of 'Handa's Surprise' and enjoyed learning about life in Africa. We sketched some wonderful exotic fruit and then had fun sharing and tasting it all. The children amazed us again with their wonderful art and their writing based on the Handa story. They loved learning about African animals and making up stories for them based on the story of Handa's Surprise. We also listened to African music and enjoyed playing along and then making our own beats using the drums.
Week ending 7.3.25

This week the children were so excited by the story of Supertato! They designed and made their own vegetable super heroes and then wrote speech bubbles for them. They had a letter from the Evil Pea saying he was planning to come and capture their vegetables so the children thought of some amazing plans to stop him - they set traps, made posters as a deterrent, made video cameras out of boxes, wrote him letters to stop him. We were amazed by the range of their ideas and of all of the effort they put in.
We also celebrated World Book Day and the children enjoyed a wonderful day of sharing their stories and showing each other their marvelous costumes.
Week ending 28.2.25

We have had a fantastic super hero themed week inspired by the text 'Juniper Jupiter'. The children have created their own super heroes and side kicks. On Wednesday they were so excited to have had a visit from Mr Freeze who had been in and frozen some of our toys! The children had to be super heroes (and scientists) by rescuing and defrosting their toys!
In maths we have worked really hard on doubles and now know lots of double number facts by heart. We used ladybirds, butterflies and dominoes to help us to explore this theme and begin to problem solve when using doubles.
Week ending 21/03/25

This week we learned all about the Arctic and the Antarctic. We read some wonderful stories as part of this topic and also looked at lots of non-fiction books so we could find out more. We learned a lot about polar bears and penguins! We read 'Penguins in the fridge' and made our own penguins like the ones in the story. In maths we made penguins of all different sizes and had a lot of fun measuring them and describing them.
