Welcome to Chestnut Class!
Miss Lloyd & Mrs Jones
I am so excited to get started and stuck in with lots of new learning, develop new skills and work with a variety of new children! Chestnut will have many opportunities for new friendship building, teamwork, independent opportunities and sharing their voice! So let's have an incredible year together! :)
Website will be updated weekly, every Friday, with pictures of our learning and any other exciting stuff we get up to!
Please Note: I will be deleting all updates every 2 weeks. This is to help ensure that accessing the website isn't too slow due to the amount of photos uploaded. So make sure you've caught up each week :)
Week 6
A final week of fun and exciting activities!
After sending our final letters to the king for our English, we received a letter from him on Monday. Inside it was explaining how he thought we gave some very persuasive reasons to not ban the dark, however wanted a little bit more from us! He gave us some writing challenges for each day this week, each with different objectives! One day we needed to do some noun (& expanded) phrases, similes, commas in lists and a couple more persuasive sentences! By the end of Friday the king was convinced and we each received a certificate from him!
In Maths we have been practicing and working really hard on our multiplying and dividing. Focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The children are clear on how to work out a dividing and multiplying question, with what methods and resources they can use. We have been focusing in on the language to go with it, for example groups of, lots of, sharing out, grouping, which the children are aware what questions they are used for. So impressed of how well the whole class has picked this up, especaily as it is completly new learning for most of the children!
For our final Art lesson of the half term, this week we sculpted and made 3D birds, using the techniques we have been practicing over the last couple of weeks! These included, manipulating paper in different ways and paper rubbings on different objects, all to add detail to the birds, thinking about texture, size and colours!

For our final Geography lesson, we this week learnt about the 5 oceans of the world. We learnt about each ocean and then located them on maps. We looked at what continents the different oceans were closest to, and compared them by size! Using this knowledge of which continents each ocean was closest to, we completed a world map jigsaw in groups, including the continents and oceans! (Apologies, the pictures are not the clearest!)
We also this week made Tudor Roses for the Harting Flower Festival this weekend which will be displayed all around the church, so be sure to pop in to see your rose! (So sorry, forgot to get any pictures of these being made! :( )
Have a lovely half term, spend it relaxing with friends and family, enjoying time in the sun (finally!!!). Ready for our final half term! :(
No learning conversation this week but keep practicing dividing and multiplying by 2, 5 and 10! Use random objects to help you, make your own groups to share and group with, divide by sharing during snack times etc! Make it fun :)
Enjoy!
Week 5
This week in English, we finished planning and writing our letters to the king, choosing wisely which reasons to present to him! We worked extra hard to ensure our sentences were as interesting as possible, with the year 2s including a variety of conjunctions, commas in a list, similes etc, as well as all of us ensuring to use a variety of sentence types, including a question and exclamation sentence.
We then put our letters into envelopes with Kings address on and will send them off to him, hoping for a reply stating that he has changed his mind on the ban!
In Maths, we have really got stuck in with our dividing, with this week practicing the sharing method. We used plates to share out 'sweets' equally and then applied this to written methods by drawing the groups ('plates') and sharing out the amounts. We then had a go with trying both the grouping and sharing method for the same questions to practice working them out differently, as well as looking at the number line method!
To continue our learning on the continents of the world in Geography (which we are loving by the way!), we this week focused on the maps and location of each continent, thinking about their sizes etc. Many children have done an excellent job of finding out at home which continents family and friends have been to (please do keep all these coming!), so we have created pins to mark on the map which continents and countries we have all been to.
We also learnt about the Equator line, understanding that any continent near the Equator meant it was a hot climate and further away from it it was a cold climate. We made a large world map on the roundhouse and had a go at placing on the map a variety of hot and cold climate places based on the Equator line.
In Art this week, we have taken our 2D bird drawing knowledge to 3D making! Next week we will be creating our own bird sculptures so this week had a go at practicing some of the techniques to ensure out birds have full detail. We had a go at doing some paper rubbings, to add detail and textures, as well as different ways to manipulate paper, for example, cutting, sticking, scrunching and tearing.
Knowledge Organisers
Please find below the knowledge organisers linked to your child's learning this term. This document provides details of the key knowledge the children are expected to learn across the sequence of learning. We would encourage parents and carers to look at these with their children and regularly spend time discussing the facts on the sheets.
