I am so excited to get started and stuck in with lots of new learning, develop new skills and work with a variety of new children! Chestnut will have many opportunities for new friendship building, teamwork, independent opportunities and sharing their voice! So let's have an incredible year together! :)
Website will be updated weekly, every Friday, with pictures of our learning and any other exciting stuff we get up to!
Please Note: I will be deleting all updates every 2 weeks. This is to help ensure that accessing the website isn't too slow due to the amount of photos uploaded. So make sure you've caught up each week :)

Week 5

This week in English, we got back on track with our invention narrative and straight away started writing it! We looked back at everything we had done so far to plan for it, the name of our character and what we had invented! We began our story off by introducing our characters, using noun phrases to describe them.

In Maths, we finished off our fractions topic, looking at non-unit fractions and learning the fraction- 3/4. We learnt that the numerator (top number) of a non-unit fraction was always greater than 1!
In History this week, we had a special visitor come in from the old Harting school from 100 years ago! She taught us all the rules from schools in the Victorian times and we even had to sit in rows on desks! Children had to stand each time an adult entered, girls were to be checked if they were dirty, children were to stand if they wanted to speak/answer a question and working needed to be done silently! We did a handwriting lesson, practicing neat Victorian letters! However, because the children didn't have any slates to write on, the children wrote out some of their letters afterwards on the playground with chalk! All children were very well behaved, no punishments needed!
To finish off our Science learning on different types of animals, we presented all our information we researched on our animals last week by having our own safari! Groups presented facts to 'tourists on a safari'. They gave information like, where they lived (showing the habitats we made last week), what they ate , were they a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore? , and what animal group they were from.

This week a much more relaxed approach was taken to learning due to the heat. To begin the week, we did some reading and maths question papers so not as much new learning in these areas this week.
On Thursday we decided to have a Science learning day, all about different animal and their habitats. We began by learning about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, identifying the different animals in these categories and what they would eat. We then in groups chose an animal to research, making a fact poster about it. We looked specifically at what it ate, where it lived and what it looked like. After we had done our posters we created a habitat for it, thinking about what type of living condition it would need. Sandy desert? Grassy grassland? forest with trees for shelter or food? Water area?
In PSHE, the year 2s this week were looking at how we change as we get older and the different things we might learn and do at different stages of our lives. We discussed that some things will happen naturally and some we learn. For example, walking, reading, driving a car.
The year 1s were identifying physical body changes by looking at a baby pictures of Miss Lloyd, talking about changes we can't control. For example, hair colour, arm and leg size etc.
We found lots of ways to ensure to stay cool. Lots of ice and water play, staying in the shade, ice lollies and chilled activities!

In DT this week, we had a go at experimenting with different joining techniques with fabric. We did some gluing, stapling, sewing and tying.
Knowledge Organisers

Please find below the knowledge organisers linked to your child's learning this term. This document provides details of the key knowledge the children are expected to learn across the sequence of learning. We would encourage parents and carers to look at these with their children and regularly spend time discussing the facts on the sheets.
