Welcome to Chestnut Class!
Miss Lloyd & Mrs Jones
I am so excited to get started and stuck in with lots of new learning, develop new skills and work with a variety of new children! Chestnut will have many opportunities for new friendship building, teamwork, independent opportunities and sharing their voice! So let's have an incredible year together! :)
Website will be updated weekly, every Friday, with pictures of our learning and any other exciting stuff we get up to!
Please Note: I will be deleting all updates every 2 weeks. This is to help ensure that accessing the website isn't too slow due to the amount of photos uploaded. So make sure you've caught up each week :)
Week 2 apologies' , some pictures have been added to last week as there were some I forgot to add. Curriculum map and knowledge organiser is also now up for this half term :)
In English this week, we focused in on some of the vocabulary found in the story, using it to write a descriptive poem on how Rosie feels. 3 words in particular that we hadn't used much before were, baffled, dismayed and perplexed. We also read our example text, which was a invention narrative very similar to the story, and looked at the vocabulary of this too, noticing the same words. This was when we started to think about what type of words we want to use in our own invention narrative.
In Maths we started a new topic of fractions. We began the topic off by reminding ourselves on what parts and wholes were, counting different amounts of parts- we practiced making equal parts with spaghetti!
We then looked at how we would write fractions, starting with half, understanding that it is 1 out of 2 parts- 1/2. We looked at halving shapes as well as quantities.

In Music this week, we were looking at duration of notes and sounds. We started off by thinking how we could make long and short sounds through our voices and body percussion, as well as experimenting with some instruments, discovering that some instruments only making long and short sounds with some making both! We then watched a clip of Charlie Chaplin (The Lion's Cage) without the sound, and looked at what bits might be short or long sounds. We used our voices and body percussion to fill in the noise.
In DT this half term, we are doing Textiles, specifically on how fabrics are joined together. For this week we had an explore of different items, looking closely on how they are joined together. We discovered some fabrics were sewn together, some glued, some stapled. We drew what we observed in our DT books, labeling it.
Summer 2 Week 6
Final half term has arrived! Lets go out with a bang! A fun and packed first week back this week! :)
In English we started our new book 'Rosie Revere, Engineer'. We started of by looking at the pictures of the book, make inferences and predictions on what is happening in the story. We looked closely at the character 'Rosie' thinking about who she was and describing her personality. We discussed the word 'Engineer' and what this was, linking it to Rosie.
We learnt the new grammar technique: compound words which are 2 individual nouns joined together to make a new noun, for example sun + flower or lip + stick. We had a go at matching different nouns together to make compound nouns and wrote some sentences with them.
In Maths this week we have been finishing off our multiplying and dividing topic, focusing on doubling and halving as well as odd and even numbers. We recognised that when we double numbers we always multiply by 2 and when we half we always divide by 2. We noticed with odd and even numbers that even you can multiply by 2 and odd you can't- odd numbers always have an extra little bit!
We started our new topic this week in History, all on 'How we used to live'. We started by discussing what is meant by the 'past' and how we can collect clues and evidence on this. We came up with the 4 ideas of: pictures, stories, asking questions and objects. This week we used pictures to help us gain clues of the past! We looked at lots of different pictures of things from the past, looking for the clues on how we know they are 'old'. We then looked more specifically at different houses from the past, one including a Roman villa, which had pillars, this was our clue.
We then looked at a Victorian house and its outside features, comparing it to a modern day house, this made it easier to find the clues. We spotted, chimneys, bay windows, a porch, stained glass windows, pointed wooden roofs. Next week we will be going for a walk around Harting to see if we can spot any of these Victorian house and any other clues that the buildings/houses are from the past.
We checked on our potato plants from before half term and they have shot up! Before half term we made predictions on how much it would've grown when we got back to school and it hugely exceeded our expectations! So we recorded down its current growth and made new predictions for a couple of weeks time! We discussed that potato plants must love the heat as it was very hot over the half term!
For our new Science topic, we are learning about the different types of animals and their animal groups. We looked at the features of different animals and matched them to the different groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates). We also looked at the key words 'omnivore , carnivore and herbivore' discussing the meanings and matching them to the groups too.
Knowledge Organisers
Please find below the knowledge organisers linked to your child's learning this term. This document provides details of the key knowledge the children are expected to learn across the sequence of learning. We would encourage parents and carers to look at these with their children and regularly spend time discussing the facts on the sheets.
