I am very pleased to welcome year 3 and year 4 pupils back to school as Rowan Class. I am really excited about the year ahead and I am very much looking forward to getting to know everyone. There is a lot to look forward to, with many interesting areas of learning planned for this academic year.

The adults working in Rowan class 2025 to 2026 are myself, Mrs Fielder and our wonderful teaching assistant Mrs Truman. On Wednesdays my leadership and planning time will be covered by Mrs Fourie. Mr Gardener will also have the class for an hour of PE on this day too.

                                     AUTUMN TERM ONE

Our topic area of learning this half term has a historical focus - we will be learning about The Great Fire of London. In Science the unit of work for both year 3 and 4 is Light. Please refer to the Knowledge Organisers below for more detail on both these subjects as well as the Curriculum Map which outlines the units of work for the remaining subjects.

WEEKLY NEWS

Week ending: Friday 3rd October

It has been another busy and productive week. Everyone has been engaged and enthusiastic in their learning WELL DONE EVERYONE.
Thank you for the cereal boxes. We have plenty now, but we could do with some more smaller boxes as well as some straw please!
On Tuesday the children finished writing their 'threat' narratives using the core text as the stimulus. Everyone tried really hard to include the vocabulary and grammar taught during the previous weeks. Since then, we have been discussing how the Iron Man could be trapped. The children have designed traps and described these using prepositions for place and time. This work is in preparation for writing a set of instructions on how to build the traps.  In maths we have continued to focus on place value in particular, ordering and comparing of numbers. Today we focused on 1, 10, 100 more or less using the base 10 apparatus to help us visualise the pattern. In art the children have been practicing drawing on a large scale using charcoal or graphite. They really enjoyed this activity and will continue with a similar activity next week. In science the children predicted what objects might be a light source then tested their ideas using a box with a hole on the side. The children noticed that many of the objects chosen were shiny but that this didn't mean they were a source of light.

Week ending: Friday 19th September

It is great to see the children happily and confidently coming into class in the mornings. They settle quickly and calmly to their morning activity which is a delight to see. All the children have received a raffle ticket every morning this week. WELL DONE TO EVERYONE.
In maths we have continued learning about the place value of 3 and 4 digit numbers including partitioning into hundreds, tens and ones. In English we have continued reading the Iron Man. This week we have been focusing on words and phrases to describe him and the effect he has on the farmers and villagers. We have finished our Great Fire of London pictures; the children are very proud of them and they look very effective too. Please come into the classroom to look at the display. In history we used pictures and statements to sequence the Great Fire. We discovered that the King helped to put out the blaze and that gunpowder was also used to blow up houses in order to create a firebreak. In computing we used BBC dancemat to help teach us touch typing.

Week ending: Friday 12th September

We have had a busy and productive week. Rowan class have settled back into their learning and have been engaged and enthusiastic.  WELL DONE EVERYONE
I think our most favourite activities this week have been:
In History, investigating clues in order to answer when, where, how and why questions about the Great Fire of London.
In English, discovering that the monster in our core text is called 'The Iron Man' and that his head is as big as a bedroom!
In science, making tents out of different fabrics in order to have absolute darkness inside. The children worked so well together testing the different materials as well as working out how to stop the light from entering the gaps or from passing through the materials that were too thin.
In art, mixing primary colours to make secondary colours, adding white to make tints of colour and adding black to make shades of colour. With this knowledge the children painted a fiery background in preparation for next week's lesson.

Week ending: Friday 5th September

On Thursday morning we found out what adventures we had had during the summer break and played a memory game in maths with a partner. In the afternoon, we painted pictures, most children choosing to paint images from their holiday.
On Friday morning we discussed our classroom expectations and played a maths game called 'guess the rule'. In the afternoon we took the parachute outside and played getting to know each other games.
Mrs Truman and I were very impressed with how confidently the children came into the classroom on both mornings and how quickly they have settled back in.
WELL DONE ROWAN CLASS
We are both looking forward to next week where we will start our core text in English (I can't say what it is, as the first couple of lessons are based on the children not knowing the book title) and our History topic, The Great Fire of London.
