I am delighted to welcome Oak Class pupils and their families to the new school year, and am looking forward to getting to know everybody. This will be an exciting year of learning, growth and new adventures as children build on their skills, develop confidence and work together as a team. There is a lot to look forward to and I can't wait to see the enthusiasm and creativity that every pupil brings to our classroom. The adults working in Oak Class this year are myself (Ms Leeb) and Miss Taylor.

Geography
Climate Change: How is Climate Change affecting our planet?

Climate change: Facts, news, features and articles about our warming planet | Live Science

Over the Summer term, our Environment-focused Geography topic will explore Climate Change (this half term) and Sustainability (next half term). The children will develop their understanding of climate change and the greenhouse effect, identifying both natural and human causes. They will learn about carbon footprints and some of the ways we can reduce these. The impact of climate change will be studied by looking more closely at how particular plant or animal species are being affected. As well as plants and animals, the children will identify ways in which children's rights are being impacted by climate change. To finish this part of the topic we will investigate how people are taking 'climate action' and think about some of the things we could do at Harting.

Animals, Including Humans: How do humans grow and develop over their life time?

In this topic, children will explore the different stages of the human life cycle. They will start by finding out about the gestation periods of different animals (including humans) and then explore the key stages of foetal development. After this, the children will explore growth and change in: babies and children; adolescence and puberty; adults and old age. By the end of the topic they will be able to pinpoint key  milestones in a human life and how these impact on the body.

Knowledge Organisers

Please find below the knowledge organisers linked to your child's learning this term. These documents provide details of the key knowledge the children are expected to learn across the sequence of learning. We would encourage parents and carers to look at these with their children and use the information on the sheets as a basis for discussion.

Our Week in Oak Class: w/b 13.04.26

This week Oak class have returned after the Easter holidays full of enthusiasm. In English the children have planned and started writing an adventure story based on one of the escapades of Odysseus. Maths lessons have focused on decimals  including converting fractions to decimals, rounding decimals and fraction, decimal, percentage equivalents.

During RE , the children, in the role of detective, were looking for evidence (in the Gospel of Luke) for the Resurrection of Jesus. They worked in groups to write a mini play-script based on the Bible verses they had read. All are looking forward to performing their play next week. Oak thoroughly enjoyed starting our new PE topic: Athletics - with a lesson that was all about stamina when running.

In our Design and Technology lessons we continued work on designing and making a prototype electric vehicle using pulleys. The children designed their vehicles and then accurately measured and safely cut the wood to make a chassis.
